I think this sums up my feelings about Valentine's Day...
I always kind of joke that under this old wreck of femininity, there beats the heart of a true romantic. Really. It's true!
In the course of my marriage, we have never done anything to celebrate Valentine's Day. When we were dating, we went to a concert once, but no more after that. It was the first year we were dating and he said he didn't plan on doing anything for V-Day in the future. Hubs doesn't believe in it--not one bit. We stopped celebrating our wedding anniversary several years ago (long story), but silly romantic that I am, I was hoping to pick another day to celebrate our relationship. Since Valentine's Day is the designated day of love, I thought it would be nice (especially since he had already refused Sweetest Day). Last year, in a desperate gesture on my part, I asked if we could please do something to celebrate and I was so surprised when he agreed! But somehow, that translated into the hubs hosting two poker parties that weekend and me doing the cooking and cleaning for it. Looking back on it, it's funny, and I suppose that says a lot about our relationship--finding humor in the not-so-humorous.
In any case, I've decided that this year, rather than mope about the lack of celebration of love, I will instead focus my energies on celebrating my love of motherhood. The kiddo gets out of school early on Monday and she and I will go have a fun mommy-daughter afternoon together, followed by a heart-shaped cake and pink candy-covered cookies.
Because if Valentine's Day is about celebrating love and celebrating us, then at least for me, this is definitely a love worth celebrating!
