Stupid gas prices...
I don't say too much about gas prices. I accept the fact that even though prices are ridiculously high, we are a population driven by oil, and the nasty prices are probably here to stay. I get that. But now I am pissed off and I need to complain about it.
I was working out our family's July budget, which includes reviewing the receipts from June. I don't know why I didn't pay more attention before, because it's probably been that way for a while, but suddenly there it was--it cost more to fill up two economical, gas-sipping cars (mine and my husband's) for one week, than it cost to feed my family for ten days. It's so ironic that most of the miles that are put on our cars are the miles traveled to and from work so that we can get paid to keep a roof over our heads and food on our table. Does that even make sense? It costs more to get to and from work than it costs to feed us.
There is something wrong here. Something very, very wrong.
I think I'm going to copy and paste this onto a new document and send it to the local paper.

Where I live, regular gasoline has gone up 14 cents in the past five days. I wonder what people who don't have the option of of public transportation will eventually have to do to make up for these additional increases?
Last year at this time I paid $2.19 for gas (I saved the receipt and put it on the refrigerator). Now it's $3.18. We are definitely more cautious about our driving habits these days.
Dad has been talking about this for a long time. What are people, especially those who only make a minimum wage, supposed to? Jobs have increasingly moved to the suburbs (think of Robin's morning drive, Margie), and sometimes public transportation isn't accessible to places of work, or worse, where the less expensive housing is! (I certainly wish I could live farther out from the city, but then I'd have to take a bus, another bus and a train to get to work, expanding my commute by up to an hour and a half! No thanks)! But not only can I not afford a new (or even new used) car right now, I couldn't handle the added cost to my already tight budget. And those with families? My heart breaks to think of them, lying awake all night, wondering how they're going to make the number works.
